Assad Breaks Silence by Backing Moscow

AMMAN -- Syrian President Bashar Assad became the first Arab leader to break his silence over the new conflict in the Caucasus by standing in clear support of Russia as Moscow faces mounting U.S.-led Western pressure for its military intervention in the Georgia crisis.
Egypt's Upper House of Parliament in Flames

Billows of black and gray smoke towered above Cairos skyline Tuesday afternoon as the countrys upper house of Parliament went up in flames. Police officials confirmed that the Shura Councils three-storey building was on fire after what they called a short-circuit set off the blaze.

Israel Need Not Fear Turkey's Islamist Government
Analysts are concerned that recent Islamist trends in Ankara could threaten the long-standing amicable relations between Israel and Turkey. These fears were highlighted by legislation passed in Turkey on Feb. 9, which rescinded a law in the constitution banning the wearing of a traditional Islamic headscarf. However, in June Turkeys high court overturned this ruling, claiming it violated separation of religion and state.

Az-Zaman (IRAQ): Iraqi Refugees in Egypt Refuse to Return to Baghdad – Iraqi refugees living in Cairo told Az-Zaman that the free repatriation trips to Baghdad upon the request of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is more of a political promotion for the government, and that those who returned in two flights did so because they had run out of savings and could not find work in Egypt.
